ESC 2023 Song Review: “We Are One” by Wild Youth (Ireland)

1) The Result

There were high hopes among fans that Brooke would be able to return the Irish to the final after a couple of misses, but 15th place in the second semi was a long way away from this goal.

2) The Process

Eurosong returned to the Late Late Show — a lot of attention was on the surprise participation of John Lydon and his band Public Image Ltd. They ended up finishing 4th, as Wild Youth won both the televote and national jury, finishing second in the international jury.

3) The Artist

Wild Youth are a four-piece indie rock band who released a debut mini-album in 2019 and have toured with a number of established musicians including Lewis Capaldi and Niall Horan. Hence, they know how to work a stadium.

4) The Song

Have you heard U2? What about Coldplay? Think about one of their songs you’d sing along to in a big crowd, and you’ll probably know how this song goes.

5) The Verdict

There’s a familiarity about this song that will most likely mean it falls into the category of comforting or somewhat disappointing for most people. The sentiments in the lyrics are universal, but also fairly milquetoast. It’s all a bit too pleasant and inoffensive, and I struggle to see how this will inspire enough people to pick up the phone.

My ranking: 27th
