Selecţia Naţională (Romania) 2022 Reviews: Outflow and Petra

Outflow — “Running in Circles”
This song brings me back to my late teens/early 20s at the turn of the 21st century. I’m reminded of fledgling acts, mostly from the USA, who specialised in emotionally-charged guitar-driven songs which managed to straddle the line between rock and pop, thereby attracting a broad audience. So while I’ve said before it’s not a good sign when I start comparing entries to other musicians, this time I think Outflow have managed to capture the genre of emoting pop-rock well without being too derivative. Or maybe they’ve just managed to press my nostalgia button. Either way, I like almost everything about this song, and hopefully we get to see it on stage at the semi-final at least.

Petra — “Ireligios”
I’m struggling with this one. While I’ve enjoyed many of the entries sung in Romanian, for some reason I can’t connect this time. I’m wondering if it’s down to the language barrier; it doesn’t help that there isn’t really a hook to serve as an anchoring point for the rest of the song. Petra gives a strong vocal performance, and the instruments a fair bit of variety throughout the track, but the ending feels very sudden to me, and I suspect that’s because despite several listens I just can’t wrap my head around the song’s structure.
