E-an-na — “Malere”
Do you like musical chaos? Well, have I got the song for you! This is the kind of fast-paced traditional folk to which you can imagine people dancing together in large circles at village fairs. Even if we don’t see this too often at Eurovision, I think we all know it goes. I don’t have a lot more to say about this — it’s a whirlwind of instruments and voices, slowing down once in a while only to speed up again as soon as possible. Too much of everything for me.
Eliza G — “The Other Half of Me”
Let’s start with the languages: we have Italian for the verses, English for the chorus. I like this bilingualism without borders, and would point out the relative success of Austria’s 2016 entry (sung in French), not to mention Estonia 2018 (sung in Italian) as evidence that opting to sing in a language that isn’t English or your native tongue can still work if the song is good. In this case, the song is a competent power ballad which follows a fairly predictable structure. I don’t think it has that extra something to elevate it above others in the same genre though.
