Festivali i Kenges (Albania) National Final 2022 Reviews: Ronela Hajati and Sajmir Çili

Ronela Hajati — “Sekret”
Undeniably one of the most interesting songs in this line-up. What initially seems to be a dreamy ballad augmented by some synths simultaneously gets a traditional twist with the introduction of an Albanian bagpipe and as well as a modern twist as Hajati drops into a deep-voiced rap. She is able to effortlessly switch between this and singing in a significantly higher register as the song moves back and forth between these two modes. If the staging can match the energy of the track, this is one of those performances where you’ll finish watching feeling pleasantly exhausted.

Sajmir Çili — “Nën maskë”
Toning it right down after the semi-chaos of the previous song, Çili opts for dramatic strings as the focal point of his musical accompaniment for the first half of his song. FRom there, the song adds a fuller sound as a well a guitar which gradually pushes its way to the front for a solo right at the end which more or less steals the show given that Çili’s vocals are competent but not compelling.
