Festivali i Kenges (Albania) National Final 2022 Reviews: Kelly and Mirud

Kelly — “Meteor”
What begins with a guitar melody sounding like it was taken from a Red Hot Chilli Peppers song from the 1990s soon transforms itself into an orchestral power ballad with rock inflections. Sure, some elements of the song (even beyond that guitar) are a bit dated, but it follows a comforting structure and executes it well. Kelly’s vocals meld well with the instruments to round out a solid package, probably one my favourite entries so far.

Mirud — “Për dreq”
Lots of fancy, cutting-edge production on this track, with surprisingly intricate acoustic guitar solos in the instrumental breaks. There are a lot of moving parts to this composition, of which Mirud’s vocals is meant to be front-and-centre, but I’m not sure this is necessarily how the song always comes across. You sense that each second has been carefully plotted out to make full use of audio space, and for the most part the result is impressive. Probably my only criticism is that the song gets caught up in its own cleverness from time to time.
